EUONYMUS continued

EUONYMUS latifolius
Large growing to 3-4.5m. Large scarlet fruits and brilliant scarlet autumn colour are some of the best of all shrubs grown for their beauty at that time of year.

EUONYMUS myrianthus
I have high hopes for this one. It is evergreen so will give useful protection. However, it is closer in it's characteristics to it's deciduous cousins than it's often variegated evergreen relations. The greenish yellow flowers occur in dense heads of up to 7 cm across in spring before giving way to orange-scarlet seeds nestled in orange-yellow fruits.

EXOCHORDA serrata Snow White
This is a fantastic selection. It is vigorous, with larger leaves and most importantly, larger flowers! We were amazed last year by the stunning butter yellow autumn colour. This plant is worthy of a place in every garden! Very early into leaf and flower, it seems untouched by late frosts. For me, those wonderful white flowers herald the start of spring.

FARGESIA nitida Nymphenburg
The culms (canes) are slender and flushed purple. The leaves are small and dark green. A graceful, extremely hardy bamboo to 3m. It is clump forming and in no way invasive.
From £10.60
NEW FORSYTHIA koreana Ilgwang
A novelty plant sent over from the States by our colleague there, this must surely be as spectacular in leaf as Forsythias traditionally are in flower. The predominant colour is yellow, though enough leaves have a central green splash to supply adequate chlorophyll for it to grow. However, it is probably safest in a shady site to prevent leaf scorch.
Available from September at £8.50
FORSYTHIA Taffs Arnold
This gorgeous form of a classic shrub was introduced into the trade from the Arnold Arboretum by Steven Taffler, the leading authority on variegated plants. Yellow flowers in spring which pick well and bright creamy yellow variegated foliage gives interest all summer. However, its best feature is its outstanding purple tinged autumn colour. An excellent plant which could not be easier to grow.

FOTHERGILLA gardenii Blue Mist
This fantastic recent introduction is definitely one of my Top Ten! The leaves are an incredible shade of blue with same white flowers and lovely autumn colour as gardenii. Light shade or sun in moisture retentive soil. I must warn you that this plant is difficult to grow - it has a particular dislike of wet roots in the winter, but equally it does not care to dry out in the summer.
Available from September at £12.00
FOTHERGILLA monticola
The leaves are smaller than those of major and appear thicker. They are more closely akin to gardenii which is smaller again. Typical white flowers in April and stunning autumn colour.

FOTHERGILLA Mount Airy
This delightful American cultivar was selected for many reasons. It exhibits good hardiness, reliably spectacular autumn colour, abundant displays of white bottle brush like flowers in April and attractive summer foliage. In short, it's just a jolly good plant!
Available from September at £12.00
